Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. However, her parents were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry claims she never wanted to become an actor during high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. She played a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being a fan of the role.
